martin johansson

Martin is an artist originally from the south of Sweden, currently living and working in Stockholm. His work is primarily figurative oil paintings with an abstract touch. No portraits really, the figures & faces in Martin's art represent emotions and possibilities. Shapes of what could be.

His latest collection of paintings "woodlands" explores the things you can barely perceive, what you can't control, changes that come with the passing of time ... how the mind itself reacts to the unknowns and outside pressure. A woodland is a low-density forest forming open habitats with plenty of sunlight and limited shade. A fitting metaphor for the calm, semi-exposed space of the mind where you can linger, observing the world around you.

His previous collection "unseen shapes" was painted exclusively for a solo show at Planet Rooth Studios in Palm Springs. In these paintings the line was an important aspect. Lines don’t exist in the real world, but the beauty and clarity that can be expressed with a few simple pen strokes in a drawing is the essence of how he expresses himself.

Up until a few years ago Martin worked as an illustrator and digital product designer. First through agencies, then as a freelancer and eventually as a founder and senior designer for the design studio Common Ground. During this time art was a side project.
